HSK 1 in stories — 150 characters grouped so they remember each other
HSK 1 is 150 characters. Learned as an alphabetical list it is a chore; learned in story families it is five small worlds. Here is the grouping, and the free practice sheets to write each one.
The official HSK 1 list is 150 characters, and the default way to meet it is a numbered table in the back of a textbook. That works about as well as memorising a phone book. The list is not random, though — it clusters into families that share shapes, radicals, and stories. Learn the families and the characters start reminding you of each other.
Here is the grouping we use, with the characters that carry stories on this site linked. The full printable pack is at the end.
The numbers: counting is drawing
一 二 三 are one, two, three lines — the most honest characters in the language. 四 was borrowed for the sound long ago and now lives inside a mouth 囗; the way to remember it is “four sides, a mouth-full”. 十 is the crossroads, ten, complete. Master these five and dates, prices, and phone numbers open up.
The people: one walker, many roles
人 is the walker. 大 is that person stretching their arms wide — “big”. 天 is the person with the sky (one more line) over their head — “sky, day, heaven”. Three characters, one evolving drawing, and all three are in the HSK 1 top twenty.
The mouth and what comes out of it
口 is a mouth. Put it in a box with a vertical line through the middle and you get 中 — middle, centre, and the first character of 中国, China. The mouth is also the radical that tags characters about speaking and eating, so every 口 you learn makes the next 叫, 吃, 问 easier to file.
The student
学 xué — to learn, to study. The traditional form (學) shows two hands over a child under a roof: a schoolhouse in one character. If you are reading this article, this is your character — you will write it on every registration form the exam board gives you.
How to study the list without suffering
- Group, don’t list. Work through one family at a time. The family members share parts, so each new character is mostly review.
- Write, don’t just read. Recognition without writing evaporates in a week. Every linked character above has a free practice sheet with the grid and fading guides; the full HSK 1 pack prints the whole list the same way.
- Say the story out loud. “Person stretching wide is big” takes four seconds to say and is what your memory will replay in the exam room.
The complete HSK 1 pack — all 150 characters as printable sheets — is in the worksheet library under HSK 1 core. Print it, write it, and the list stops being a list.
