Why these 15
Mid-Autumn falls on the fifteenth day of the eighth lunar month, when the moon is at its roundest. Families eat together, the cakes are round, the table is round, and the word for the whole occasion is 团圆 — round and whole. Roundness is not decoration here; it is the argument the festival is making. The rabbit children are told to look for in the moon has been in Chinese stories for two thousand years, pounding medicine with a pestle.

Running it
- 圆 and 团 both sit inside 囗, an enclosure. Round moon, round cake, family closed in a circle — the shape of the character is doing the same work as the festival.
- 明 is the gift of this sheet: sun and moon side by side meaning bright. It is eight strokes, it decomposes perfectly, and it appears constantly afterwards.
- 兔 is here because of the moon rabbit, not because of zoology. If the class has done the zodiac sheet they have already written it, which makes this one feel easier than it is.
- Pair the writing with the food if you can. 饼 is a character most learners meet first as an object on a plate, and the association holds.
