Why these 15
The word for tea left China twice. Overland along the Silk Road it travelled as chá, which is why Russian has chai and Turkish has çay. By sea out of the Fujian ports it travelled as the local te, which is why English has tea and French has thé. Almost every word for tea on the planet is one of those two syllables, and which one a language ended up with tells you how the tea got there. The character itself, 茶, is a person standing between grass and a tree — a picker among the bushes.
For the teacher
What a learner should be able to do afterwards
- Write 茶 and take it apart into grass, person and tree
- Name the vessels: 杯 and 壶
- Use 喝 with 茶 and 水 in a short sentence
Running it
- 茶 is 艹 over 人 over 木 — grass above, a person between, a tree below. Whatever its real history, the picture is a person among the tea bushes, and it is the reason this character is remembered after one sitting.
- 喝 is twelve strokes and has 口 on the left, the mouth. Every character on this sheet that involves drinking or eating carries it, which is the most useful radical a beginner can learn early.
- 青 will raise a hand. It covers both blue and green, and in 青茶 it is neither — it is the tea. 'The old word for the whole range' is a true and sufficient answer.
- This one works well with actual tea on the table. It is also the pack adults are most likely to finish, which matters more than it sounds.
