Why these 24
Most Chinese characters are not pictures. But the oldest layer is, and those are the ones worth meeting first, because they are also the components everything else is built from. 水 is a stream with current lines. 山 is three peaks. 雨 is drops falling from a cloud. Learn these twenty-four and you stop seeing later characters as arbitrary tangles: you start seeing water on the left of 河, fire under 热, a roof over 家.

Running it
- This is the sheet to use when a learner says characters are impossible to remember. Twenty-four counter-examples in one sitting changes the premise of everything after it.
- Cover the English and show only the character. Most groups get 山 水 火 木 日 月 口 目 unaided; the guessing is the lesson, not the sheet.
- 耳 目 口 手 心 are all body parts and all appear as components in hundreds of characters. Writing them now is banking work that pays back for years.
- Do not oversell it. These twenty-four stayed pictures; most characters did not, and a learner who expects every character to be a drawing will feel cheated in month two. Say so at the start.

Questions people ask
Only a few hundred, out of tens of thousands. The overwhelming majority are phono-semantic compounds: one part hints at the meaning, the other at the sound. But those few hundred are the parts the rest are assembled from.
