Using these sheets
Print them, photocopy them, hand them out. Use them in a classroom, a weekend school or at your kitchen table. You do not need permission and you do not need to pay.
What you can do without thinking about it
- Print any sheet, as many copies as you want.
- Use them with your class, your school or your family, including where fees are charged for the teaching.
- Save a sheet as a PDF and email it to the parents in your class.
If you republish them
Two of the things on a sheet are not ours to give away without conditions, and they travel with the sheet:
- The English glosses come from CC-CEDICT, which is CC BY-SA 4.0. Commercial use is allowed. Attribution is required, and a work that adapts CC BY-SA material has to be shared under the same licence. This is why a printed sheet with English on it carries the credit line in its footer — please leave it there.
- The stroke-order data descends from the Arphic fonts and is used under the Arphic Public Licence, which has its own conditions on redistribution.
The typeface is LXGW WenKai under the SIL OFL 1.1, which permits embedding in documents. That is what lets a sheet look the same on your printer as on ours.
Being built on open data does not make everything here unconditioned: "open" and "no obligations" are different things, and CC BY-SA in particular asks something of anyone who passes the material on. If you are planning to redistribute sheets at scale or bundle them into something you sell, read those two licences rather than taking this page's word for it.
What we do not promise
The site is free and provided as it is. The character data is good and it is not infallible — HanziTrace tells you on the about page exactly which parts have been checked by a person and which have not, and the generator flags readings worth verifying. If you are teaching from a sheet, glance at those flags first.
Our own text
The pack introductions, teacher's notes and culture notes are written for this site. You are welcome to use them with your own learners; please do not republish them as your own.
